MADRID — Basque terrorist group ETA ceased operations more than a decade ago but in the lead-up to Spain’s July 23 election the group has made a surprising comeback in the rhetoric of the country’s right-wing parties.Throughout the campaign, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the center-right Popular Party, has sought to link socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to the terrorist group by pointing out that his government has sometimes relied on parliamentary support from the Basque political party EH Bildu. Although the Spanish judiciary repeatedly has found EH Bildu is a democratic political group that is allowed to legally exist, Feijóo and other members of his party routinely equate it to ETA, which was responsible for the murder of over 850 people between 1968 and 2010.During Monday’s one-on-one debate with Sánchez, Feijóo accused the prime minister of making deals with “the political arm” of a terrorist organization. He also rejected calls to de...Inequality — the permanent crisis

Lamia Kamal-Chaoui is the director of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s Centre for Entrepreneurship, SMEs, Regions and Cities.Crisis has become the new normal. As the world struggles to recover from the pandemic, Russia’s war on Ukraine has plunged us into a cost-of-living crisis. Though inflation has come down from its peak, prices continue to rise and incomes are not keeping up. And while governments are rightly focused on responding to the challenge of taming inflation, there’s another, more pervasive threat that connects these crises: inequality. Over the past three decades, the gap between the rich and poor has widened in most member countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). During the first two years of the pandemic alone, the wealth of the world’s 10 richest individuals doubled, while over 100 million people globally fell into poverty. And now, the cost-of-living crisis is disproportionately affecting...Is Turkey now joining the EU? No, but the EU is engaging

Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s latest round of geopolitical brinkmanship came with a new twist this week: Linking his support for Sweden’s NATO bid with Turkey’s own application to join the EU.It was an audacious move. It caught even close observers by surprise. And it has zero chance of happening any time soon.Numerous EU leaders and officials did make a careful public show of treating the Turkish leader’s request seriously, pledging to explore ways to revive the country’s moribund EU accession and to work more closely with the country in the meantime. But as a serious prospect, EU membership was discarded almost instantly. “Pure posture,” quipped one former European Commission official who worked on Turkey’s EU bid.“You cannot link the two processes,” said European Commission spokeswoman Dana Spinant. Even publicly, some of the EU’s most high-profile figures were quick to tamp down any speculation.“That’s a question that is not related to the other issue, and th...Sorry Russia, the Baltic Sea is now NATO’s lake

VILNIUS — A resurgent NATO is set to tighten its grip on the Baltic Sea, complicating a vital transit route for Vladimir Putin’s navy in Russia’s backyard. This week’s alliance summit in Vilnius was Finland’s first as a NATO member. On the summit’s eve, Turkey agreed to back Sweden’s bid to join — paving the way for a strategic shift in a region Moscow once dominated. “[Sweden and Finland] make NATO much more geographically coherent. The Baltic Sea becomes a NATO lake, which is generally useful, also because of the Arctic’s increased importance,” said Ulrike Franke, a senior fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations. NATO has steadily increased its control of the Baltic Sea — a crucial maritime gateway for the Russian fleet which has bases near St. Petersburg and in the heavily militarized Kaliningrad exclave. During the Cold War, only Denmark and Germany at the far western edge of the Baltic were in the alliance.
