CEOs got smaller raises. It would still take a typical worker two lifetimes to make their yearly pay

After ballooning for years, CEO pay growth is finally slowing. The typical compensation package for chief executives who run S&P 500 companies rose just 0.9% last year, to a median of $14.8 million, according to data analyzed for The Associated Press by Equilar. That means half the CEOs in the survey made more and half made less. It was the smallest increase since 2015.Still, that’s unlikely to quell mounting criticism that CEO pay has become excessively high and the imbalance between company bosses and rank-and-file workers too wide. Discontent over that gap has helped fuel labor unrest, and even some institutional investors have pushed back against a few of the most eye-popping packages. The smaller increase came after CEO pay soared 17% in 2021, when boards rewarded top executives handsomely for steering their companies through the pandemic-induced recession. Last winter was a terrible time to be a strawberry in California — and maybe an even worse time to be a strawberry farmer. At Harry’s Berries in Oxnard, California, the rain came down so hard it flattened acres of strawberry beds “like pancakes,” said operations manager Kristopher Gean, whose grandfather Harry Iwamoto started the farm more than 50 years ago. Each bed had to be dug up by hand, costing the farm more than $100,000 in labor.Even then, the berries that survived to make it to market were bloated, insipid and expensive. “Everyone on Instagram was complaining: ‘These berries don’t taste that good,’” Gean said. “And they were right.”From January to March, bad weather and bland berries were the rule for farmers across California, who grow about 85% of the commercial strawberries in the United States. And the devastated crops, with their low yields, astronomically drove up prices for any berries you could find.Things have finally turned around: California berries are back on th...Lake George traffic stop ends in firearm arrest

Dear Amy: My girlfriend and I have been together for three years. She recently took a trip to her hometown. While there, she met up with a married friend of hers who has been blatantly inappropriate in the past. While she was gone, I was busy planning a proposal: ring shopping, venue, photography, the works.I clearly expressed my discomfort with this friendship, but she went ahead and met with him. (She has other male friends I have absolutely no qualms about.) Her lack of boundaries has been an occasional issue, but this time I feel really hurt.We discussed this with our therapist, who also thought it was not OK that she met up with this friend, but my girlfriend seems to think there is nothing wrong with it.She said they met in a restaurant and he tried making a pass at her, but nothing happened.During our therapy session, I pleaded that, even if she truly didn’t see a reason to block this person, would she at least do it for me?She said she’d blocked him, but it turns out she just ...Harriette Cole: I’m uncomfortable with what my boyfriend does for work

DEAR HARRIETTE: I am currently in a relationship with a photographer, and although it has been only a few months, I am finding myself feeling increasingly uncomfortable with some of his work.Specifically, I have noticed that he frequently photographs other women in sexually suggestive poses or outfits. While I understand that this is a part of his profession and creative vision, I can’t help but feel a sense of jealousy and insecurity about it.I have tried talking to him about it, but he brushes it off and insists that it’s just art and has nothing to do with our relationship.Related ArticlesAdvice | Harriette Cole: This young man’s question made me realize the truth about my marriage Advice | Harriette Cole: My dad’s job is in DEI, but you should hear what he says when he’s stressed Advice | Harriette Cole: She was mean to me, and now she wants my help getting a job Advice | Harriette Cole: I s...Additional funding for most vulnerable Fairfax Co. students at risk as amended state budget remains unfinished

Additional funding for the most vulnerable Fairfax County Public School students is at risk as Virginia lawmakers remain divided over how they will distribute a revenue surplus and pass an amended budget. In a letter to the Fairfax County General Assembly Delegation, obtained by WTOP, school board members representing the state’s largest school system described the consequences of a Department of Education calculation error that they say has yet to be fully addressed by the state. That, coupled with no movement on an amended budget, has created uncertainty, the letter says.Like other Northern Virginia school systems, Fairfax County has approved its fiscal 2024 budget, a $3.5 billion package that includes a 3% raise for all staff and funding for middle school athletics for the first time. However, the school board said a finalized budget at the state level is needed to give local jurisdictions “time to adjust to any state changes that might be made prior to the opening of ...Latest news
